A communicative approach through multiplayer gaming
|
Description
This session is a chance to delve into the world of games and the engagement that well-designed examples can bring. You'll first begin by considering games as a subset of technological tools available to educators, and then move on to focus on the distinct characteristics that make gaming a unique medium which affords particular advantages for language learning.
There will a scheduled periods to play new multiplayer games online with your fellow learners. Additionally, there will be opportunities to collectively think about integrating games with other forms of instruction. Both synchronous (game play, chat sessions) and asynchronous (reading reviews and discussion) will span time and distance during the course of this session.
Objectives
In the course the 6 weeks, participants will have hands-on opportunities to:

Experience what students will see and feel while playing multiplayer online games in order to strengthen emerging language skills

Gain a deeper understanding for how digital games support learning, focusing on qualities which are especially pertinent to language acquisition

Approach lesson plan development and curriculum support

Review how student achievement can be reported
Target Audience
Teachers of English Language Learners who are interested in (a) understanding the general capabilities of digital games and (b) gaining experience with an emerging suite of games designed specifically for ELLs. Basic computer skills assumed.
