SMART TEACHING WITH INTERACTIVE WHITE BOARDS

Syllabus

In this workshop we’ll explore the world of Interactive Whiteboards: the pedagogy, the tools and resources supplied by the vendors, as well as the vast array of ready-made materials available online. We’ll be creating and sharing simple activities along the way, culminating with bigger pair/group projects.

We will use the Yahoo Group for introductions, tutorials and eventual doubts, course wiki for the session timeline, activities and group work, our virtual office at TappedIn for weekly chats. We will also be having synchronous presentations with guest speakers.

Objectives:

In the course of the 6 weeks, participants will:

  • discuss the pedagogy of using IWBs
  • explore IWB software according to the interactive whiteboard used
  • check out online resources that can be used on IWBs
  • create lesson activities and share them with the group

At the end of the workshop participants will be invited to join online communities of IWB teachers.

Target audience:

Teachers who are using IWBs or those who are afraid to do so, but have access to them.

Weekly contents:

Week 1

Introductions

Participants will introduce themselves to the group, get acquainted with the Yahoo Groups and Wiki platforms, filling out an information table in the wiki and interacting with each other through Yahoo Groups forum. Groups will be be formed according to participants’ expertise and needs so that they can begin to exchange ideas on creating future projects. They will be introduced to the software and determine its capacity in the classroom.

Week 2

Pedagogy of using IWBs

Participants will explore the usefulness of IWB technology in the classroom and encouraged to join in a debate. They will be asked to read suggested material and write a response to the discussion in the participants' wiki. Their opinions will be considered for further discussion which will be held in our TappedIn virtual office. Participants will also use delicious, a popular social bookmarking service, that will be used throughout the session for sharing resources.

Week 3

Creating lessons with IWB software

Participants will begin to create lessons based on tutorials relating to the IWB software available. They will choose an interesting activity and they will adapt it to their own teaching needs. Then they will insert a link to their own activity in the participants' wiki and post comments to the YahooGroup on the challenges they faced when completing the task. At the end of the week the group will meet in our virtual office at TappedIn for a chat.

Week 4

Finding and using online resources.

Participants will explore some online activities, especially made for IWBs, that have been created by other teachers. They will select an activity from the vast array of resources that they can incorporate into their own lesson from Week 3. They will then post a message to Yahoo Group telling others about their link. This week participants will make contact with people in their group and start planning their group projects.

Participants more familiar with the software will have a chance to explore its advanced features and/or some interactive whiteboard peripherals.

Week 5

Pair/group projects

Working with a partner or group, participants will create a lesson or a sequence of activities for a particular class or group of students. They will post links to their activities into the projects page of their participants' wiki. They will convert their work into a readable format e.g. pdf, webpage or PowerPoint in order to allow people using other IWB platforms to review it. The group will meet again in our TappedIn virtual office to talk about projects.

Week 6

Evaluation and wrap-up

Participants will reflect on their use of IWBs by reading selected rubrics and posting a message in YahooGroups. They will comment on lesson planning with IWBs and will share plans on the future of their IWB journey. They will join other IWB support groups and take the final EVO Evaluation Survey.
