Media Resources and Emotions in Teaching and Learning


Abstract

This five-week session involves participants looking at and understanding emotion with regard to teaching and learning. Emotions are the centerpiece for reflection on human interaction with media resources. Different media provide diverse opportunities on how emotions filter teaching and learning. Sharing reflections collaboratively creates insight, connection and engagement to the variety of emotions.

 

Session Objectives

By the end of this session participants will have: 

- Reflected on and discussed the possible embodiment of emotions on teaching and/or learning 
- Used online media resources to foster professional collaboration 
- Explored ways to share educational materials on the internet responsibly 
- Shared our reflections, opinions and subjective experiences valuing diversity and tolerance
- Engaged in mutual dialogue that offers possibilities of sharing different perspectives in expanding the human experience in teaching and learning

 

 

Target audience

EFL and ESL teachers, online and traditional educators, and learners of other languages.

Weekly Content

Before the session starts, participants can:

- Join the session Google+ Community

- Preview Week 1 resources

- Reflect on what they know and want to know about teaching and learning from their emotional starting points

  

 

Week 1   (Jan 10 - 17, 2016)

In Week 1, we will meet one another and discuss the power of emotions in teaching and learning. Participants will: 

- Become familiar with our Google+ Community 
- Introduce themselves on our Google+ Community page 
- Engage and use online media
- Reflect on online media and how emotions might impact  teaching and learning 
- Post their response to online media and share comments that have come through technical and human engagement 
- Attend a Google Hangout on Air

 

 

Week 2  (Jan 18 - 24, 2016)

In Week 2, we'll discuss the ways in which emotions impact educators and the way in which we might twist and bend to fit within categories that might be outside of our own personal and professional positions. We'll also explore how this might create choices with online media choices. Participants will: 

- Share their reflections/questions about videos and readings 
- Respond to others' questions and our poll questions regarding disciplinary definitions of emotions as well as our own subjective locations in using online media resources 
- Find and share online media exemplars on the Internet for discussion 

 

 

Week 3   (Jan 25 - 31, 2016)

In Week 3, we'll discuss humans respond to teaching and learning based on our shared understandings of emotions. What are the ways that emotions might enhance or expand our current practices of teaching or learning. Participants will: 

- Watch videos / complete readings 
- Discuss responsibly posting information to the internet for educational purposes 
- Post ideas on how our shared discussions provide opportunities for change in teaching or learning, and using teaching materials or learning materials for collaborative purposes 
- Attend a Google Hangout on Air

 

 

Week 4  (Feb 1 - 7, 2016)

In Week 4, we will use comics to explore this topic further. Participants will: 

- Engage comics to reflect on teaching or learning as a means of applying ideas to our own practices 
- Share their comics
- Give feedback to other participants 
- Explore the ways in which comics portray the world through our own personal perspectives

 

 

Week 5  (Feb 8-14, 2016)

In Week 5, participants will: 

- Engage the idea of experience
- Reflect on peer reviewed feedback and share future creative possibilities 
- Evaluate session with discernment and respect
- Attend a Google Hangout on Air

I’m the director of the Academic English and ESL Programs at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota and have a Master of Arts in TESOL from the University of Southern California.
