The IATEFL YLTSIG EVO 2015 sessions will examine teaching English to Young Learners and Teens from around the world using using storytelling and drama, games, and action songs.
By the end of this workshop, participants will have:
brainstormed and discussed topical issues of concern in teaching YLTs around the world
discussed methods of teaching young learners via storytelling and drama, games, actions songs, and arts and craft
created activities using storytelling and drama, games, action songs, and arts and craft.
These sessions are designed for all those involved in teaching young learners and teens irrespective of context or degree of experience. Participants will be expected to have the basic skills necessary to facilitate communication via an online discussion group.
During week 1 of the course, participants will
join the meeting places
get acquainted with the other members
learn to navigate the group environments
get a general view of the topics for weeks 2-5
brainstorm and discuss topical issues of concern in teaching YLTs around the world
During week 2 of the course, participants will:
discuss theories of teaching and learning English language skills via storytelling and drama
discuss storytelling and drama in the YLT classroom
consider the benefits and challenges involved in using storytelling and drama
create activities that involve storytelling and drama
During week 3 of the course, participants will
discuss theories of teaching and learning English language skills via games
discuss games in the YLT classroom
consider the benefits and challenges involved in using games
create activities that involve games
During week 4, participants will
discuss theories of teaching and learning English language skills via action songs
discuss action songs in the YLT classroom
consider the benefits and challenges involved in using action songs
create activities that involve action songs
During week 5, participants will:
Showcase their reflections using blog posts, presentations, and video tutorials.

Kalyan Chattopadhyay works as a teacher trainer, lecturer, researcher, and consultant in a range of contexts. He has given plenary and invited talks in Cambodia, China, Nepal, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Taiwan, UK, and Vietnam. He has long-standing interest in technology-assisted language learning, and teaching young learners. He is the Coordinator, IATEFL, Young Learners and Teenagers SIG and Vice President, Asia Association of Computer Assisted Language Learning. An alumnus of the University of Leeds, and Hornby Trust (UK) he works as the Director, English Language Centre, Bankim Sardar College. He has written course books for the Cambridge University Press, and has received prestigious IELTS research award in 2014.
