Teachers as Designers

Abstract

Teachers as Designers is a 5-week project-based session which follows on a successful Hands on ICT (Information and Communications Technology) MOOC for educators interested in developing creativity techniques and approaches to integration of educational technologies inspired by learning design. It is an adapted version to suit the needs of language teachers and teacher trainers from all ELT sectors. During the session the participants are going to acquaint themselves with the Learning Design framework in order to design, evaluate and refine a learning technology-based activity (or a sequence of activities) which, by meeting the exact needs of their learners, aims to solve an educational challenge in the participant's context.

Session Objectives

During this session, the participants will:

  • get to know Learning Design framework as a way of integrating learning technology into the classroom;

  • design, evaluate and refine a learning technology-based activity that fits their educational context and meets their students' specific needs;

  • further develop peer reviewing and constructive feedback provision skills;

  • acquaint themselves with or further develop expertise in using a personalised selection of digital tools (assistance will be provided but please note this is not the primary aim of the course; the focus is on the principles of learning design).

Target audience

Any English (and in fact Modern) language teacher or teacher trainer who is interested in meaningful integration of educational technology into the classroom.

Tech savviness is not required but some basics* when it comes to educational technology use are helpful and so is openness to experimentation and peer learning.

* Use of online collaborative documents, sharing content via hyperlinks, embedding audio and video files, information search techniques.

Session completion

Certificates of Active Completion will be awarded for successfully completing the following minimum:

  • building an ICT-based activity in line with the Learning Design process;
  • participating in at least 3 out of the 5 peer reviews;
  • completing the reflective report at the end of the session.

Syllabus - Week by week

The session consists of 5 weekly phases (Mon-Sun), each consisting of a sequence of 3 core tasks and a peer-reviewing activity (except for week 1 which consists of Get Started activities and two core activities, followed by a peer-reviewing activity).
