The Electronic Village Online

For five weeks in January and February, TESOL experts and participants from around the world engage in collaborative online discussions or hands-on virtual workshops of professional and scholarly benefit. These sessions bring together participants for a longer period of time than is permitted by land-based professional development conventions and allow a fuller development of ideas than is otherwise possible.

Sessions are free and open to anyone around the globe. It is not necessary to be a TESOL or IATEFL member nor to attend the TESOL Convention in order to participate. All you need is access to the Internet.

We invite you to choose a session from this year's offerings, listed below.  And please inform your colleagues about this unparalleled professional development opportunity!

Classroom_Based_Research

This EVO Project, led by a team of volunteer teacher educators and supported by several teacher associations, will provide a hands-on introduction to inquiry-based teacher development, especially (though not exclusively) for teachers working in difficult circumstances (large classes, low-resource classrooms, etc.). The five-week workshop will take participants through different stages of teacher-research, engaging them in practical activities to gradually build their confidence in teacher-research.

EVO Minecraft MOOC

This session will invite interested teachers to join us in playing Minecraft, learning all we can about playing alone and together, and how Minecraft is being used effectively in language learning. We'll learn by doing and from one another. We'll continue where we left off last year while welcoming and assisting newcomers.

By the end of the session participants will learn how to function and survive in minecraft, and how they can use what they learn to guide students into interesting and self-motivating task-based learning projects.

Flipped_learning

This five-week online workshop is designed for both those new to flipped learning and those who are already flipping their classes. In flipped learning, content delivery takes place outside of class freeing the instructor to focus class on interactive, collaborative projects and activities for maximum language acquisition in a meaningful context. Participants will practice with various video creation tools, gain skills in curating already existing media, and will learn how to effectively incorporate these resources into their teaching practices. Of course, whenever possible, the workshop employs a flipped approach!

Teaching Pronunciation Differently

All teachers have tried to teach pronunciation using 'listen and repeat', and most of us have found the results unsatisfactory. But there is a different way, and it works very well. The 'Articulatory Approach' teaches students what to do with their mouths to sound right. Join us in TPD 2017 to explore how to teach pronunciation this way.

TECHNO-CLIL 2018

Techno CLIL – Content and Language Integrated Learning - is a "dual focus" methodology, fostering the development of language competencies and the delivery of subject content at the same time. It refers to the learning of a curricular subject in a foreign language, with great advantages in terms of students' learning outcomes and cognitive processes.

CLIL is spreading more and more, as an integrated part of school curricula in many countries. In order to implement this innovative approach, the role of teacher training is essential.

This EVO session is aimed at spreading CLIL methodology, combining teaching strategies and technical tools and eliciting reflections and discussions among teachers from all over the world. We share good practices from the different countries and learn from other colleagues through synchronous and asynchronous meetings. Webinars with national and international CLIL experts will be a highlight of this session.
