Reflection and Practice on the Integration of Virtual and Physical Classrooms

 

 

 

Session Description

 

This session intends to foster a reflection process on the integration of virtual and physical classrooms through the use of different technological tools and strategies that will give participants some ideas on how to deal with such integration exercise. 

 

Objectives 

 

By the end of this workshop, participants will have
 

  • learned how language and technology are merged in different contexts around the world. 
  • explored how to use different technological tools in order to integrate virtual and physical classrooms. 
  • devised different strategies to foster learner autonomy in their virtual-physical language classrooms 

 

Target audience

 

Adult and teenager EFL / ESL teachers who seek for alternative strategies to integrate virtual and physical classrooms.

Weekly Outline

 

WEEK 1 - SETTING THE GROUNDS (Jan 11 - 16, 2011)

 

During the first week of the course, we will be getting to know each other, our contexts and the way the foreign/second language is viewed and taught in our institutions.  Also, we will be discussing about the way we view technology and its uses.

 

 

Our objectives for this week are:

 

  • To learn about different contexts and conditions under which technology is being implemented in the language classroom.
  • To discuss our own practices with participants from all over the world.
  • To learn how to create a slide show on www.sliderocket.co

 

 

WEEK 2 - THE CONCEPT OF LANGUAGE AND THE WAY IT CHANGES OUR PRACTICES  (Jan 17 - 23, 2011)

During this week we will take a look at the integral conception of language and how it changes the way we implement technology in our language classroom.

 

Our objectives for this week are:

 

  • To understand the integral concept of language.
  • To design a communicative task to be carried out through a virtual tool.
  • To define ways to connect virtual and physical classrooms through the use of technology. 

 

 

WEEK 3 - THE NEW ROLES IN THE VIRTUAL CLASSROOM    (Jan 24 - Jan 30, 2011)

 

During week 3, we will be exploring the change in roles we experiment when integrating virtual and physical classrooms.

 

Our objectives for this week are:

 

 

 

WEEK 4 - IN SEARCH OF THE AUTONOMOUS LEARNER  (Jan 30 - Feb 06, 2011)

 

During week 4 we will be exploring different strategies to foster autonomy among our learners.

 

Our objectives for this week are:

 

  • To design different strategies to foster autonomy in the language learner.
  • To get to know some technological tools to be implemented in the language classroom in order to foster autonomy in the learner.

 

 

WEEK 5 - WRAPPING UP THE INTEGRATION EXERCISE    (Feb 07 -13, 2011)

 

During this week, participants will develop a full project in which they will show how to use the tools learned during the previous weeks in order to work a certain topic by means of the integration of virtual and physical language classrooms.

 

Participants will complete a short evaluation survey.

Malcolm Peñaranda

 

 EFL, FFL and SFL teacher who has been teaching at universities, schools, kindergartens and language institutes in Colombia, Venezuela and the States for 22 years now. He holds a BA in Education (languages) with Honors from UPB Medellín (Colombia). Director of Linguatrends, a language institute in Medellín. He also teaches at the Universidad de Antioquia, Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (UPB) and writes in both English and Spanish.
