Session Outline

 

 

Abstract

 

This online session will focus on audio production and distribution for teachers via Web 2.0 tools. Teachers who wish to create or manipulate audio for their teaching purposes will find these free tools and techniques very useful.

 

Target Audience

Any educator interested in creating or optimizing digital audio for improving their instructional materials; particularly teachers who have small budgets, since most of these resources are free. Teachers interested in using communication tools in their teaching, be it exclusively online or blended with face-to-face teaching. Level: Must have basic computer skills, including MSWord and surfing the Internet. Requirements: Must have an e-mail account and Internet access. A headset, or microphone and computer speakers (may be built in), is required.

Syllabus 

 

Weekly Outline

 

Participants will:

- Use various tools for creating audio learning opportunities
- Experience the process of script writing for audio
- Interact through e-mail, text chat, forums, wikis and Elluminate
- Contribute to wikis, and post works related to their own contexts
- Reflect on ways of applying those tools to their teaching
- Participate in optional weekly chats held to discuss content and pre-defined topics

 

Week 1  (Jan 9 - 15, 2012)

 

  • Getting to know one another. Introduction.
  • Participants will meet moderators and each other,
  • complete an exploratory survey, and discuss needs and expectations, and their own materials development requirements.
  • The concept of audio teaching with examples is introduced and discussed.
  • Moderators will introduce the concept of planning a mixed media presentation of learning activities, with examples, and host discussion of what makes a solid audio activity.
  • A set of criteria with a set of seven audio editors will be provided.
  • The participants will be challenged to complete a non physical "orienteering" activity to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each resource.

 

 

Week 2  (Jan 16 - 22, 2012)

 

  • Participants will be guided to create a plan to either use audio as a final product or as an element within a larger learning opportunity.
  • Issues such as hosting, embedding and various presentation of audio for learning situation will be explored.
  • Defining goals for a final product.

 

Week 3  (Jan 23 - Jan 29, 2012)

 

  • Core skills and concepts of audio recording, editing and packaging will be presented, practiced and evaluated based on set criteria.
  • Participants will use these to identify which audio tool or tools they will use to complete their project.

 

 

Week 4  (Jan 30- Feb 05, 2012)

 

  • The focus will be on optimizing audio and presentation of audio elements within a series of Web 2.0 resources.

 

Week 5  (Feb 06 -12, 2012)

 

 

  • This week will be used for sharing practical projects as well as the experience of the course itself.
  • It is anticipated that this week of sharing will result in concrete lists, blog posts, or media projects that can be shared around the TESOL community.
  • EVO evaluation survey will be taken.
