Social Networking: Making it work for you and your students!

 Abstract 

In this session, participants will increase their knowledge of social networking and Web 2.0 applications for both professional development and to encourage student participation and collaboration. Participants will actively collaborate with their course colleagues on a daily basis as we explore, discuss, reflect, and then create activities with different sets of social networking tools each week.

 

 

Target Audience

ESL/EFL educators who are interested in using social-networking to motivate their students and/or find inspiration among a wider network of colleagues. The tools we will explore can be appropriate for online, blended or face-to-face learning environments.
Student Level: Appropriate for many levels, as you will adapt the technology for your students.  
Technology familiarity and requirements: Must have an email account, familiarity with web-browsers, Internet access and navigation skills. Having a headset with microphone is recommended. A web-cam is recommended, but not required.

Course Goals

 

By the end of this workshop, participants will

  • develop knowledge of the tools, activities, and resources that online social networking can provide
  • try out a number of social networking applications for yourself, to add to your personal learning network
  • search out social networking applications and investigate how they might contribute to student language learning and motivation
  • evaluate social networking applications for their language learning potential
  • discuss ways to incorporate social networking applications into lesson plans and evaluate their use by students

 

Week 1  (Jan 9 - 15, 2012)

 

During the first week of the course, participants will:

  • understand the goals of the course
  • get acquainted with the course Spuz web space
  • consider the course expectations
  • define the terms Personal Learning Network (PLN), Social Networking, and RSS, and articulate the questions you have about using social networking for language teaching and learning
  • begin to develop a Personal Learning Network
    • create a personal page in Spruz
    • introduce yourself to the group via video (intervue.me)
  • create a Diigo account and discuss readings in Diigo

 

Week 2  (Jan 16 - 22, 2012)

 

During this week, participants will:

  • join Twitter and begin following other participants and educators
  • participate in a Twitter group activity
  • join a social-networking group (Facebook) and interact with other participants at this site (polls, documents, etc.)
  • compare and discuss Facebook and Spruz social-networking environments
  • find and share related readings in Diigo in small groups

 

Week 3  (Jan 23 - Jan 29, 2012)

 

During this week, participants will:

  • participate in a Voicethread activity within the Ning
  • create a Voicethread activity and learn to embed or link it
  • create an audio or video activity using Viewpoint and embed / link it
  • participate in other participants’ activities
  • find and share related resources in Diigo in small groups.

 

 

Week 4  (Jan 30- Feb 05, 2012)

 

During this week participants will:

  • find and explore a social-networking application of their choice
  • create an activity in your application for the class to participate in
  • participate in course colleagues’ activities
  • find and share related resources in Diigo in small groups

 

 

Week 5  (Feb 06 -12, 2012)

  

During this week, participants will:

  • share results and impressions of activity participation from Week 4
  • discuss all session activities and possible applications to your students
  • interview a session colleague about favorite session activity via Wetoku and embed / link
  • evaluate the EVO-SN course

Alyssa Ruesch is the classroom support coordinator at the CLA Language Center and an ESL instructor in the Minnesota English Language Program at the University of Minnesota.  Alyssa first became interested in teaching with technology while working on her master's degree; she found it the most exciting way to bring relevant content into her courses and to encourage collaborative, constructive learning opportunities.  In addition to teaching ESL at the University of Minnesota, Alyssa helps facilitate courses and workshops to help other second language teachers use technology effectively in their own teaching.  She's looking forward to further exploring opportunities in online second language education. 

 

 


Marlene Johnshoy
is the LT4 (Technology Training Targeted for Language Teachers) project coordinator and the Web Manager at the Center for Advanced Research in Language Acquisition (CARLA), University of Minnesota. After many years as a high school and college-level Spanish instructor, her main mission has become that of assisting language teachers to incorporate computers and the Internet into their language teaching – and to have fun doing it! Ms. Johnshoy is particularly interested in discovering and developing tools for online language teaching and learning. She has given numerous regional and national workshops on many aspects of web-based language teaching and learning.
