Abstract

 

In 5 weeks, collaborate with over 500 teachers worldwide to design the 1st chapter of an e-textbook that meets your students' needs. In addition, receive support from 15+ moderators, with experience in publishing and materials design. We officially begin Jan. 15th & end Feb. 15th, 2015.

Audience: 

This session is for all teachers who want to begin drafting a chapter or more of a digital textbook that is relevant and updated to support their learners.

Session objectives:

  

By the end of this online session, participants will have:

  • created one or more chapters of a digital textbook  

  • explored various ebook formats and determined which best meets their needs

  • had hands-on experience using curation tools to create their etextbooks

  • learned about Creative Commons Licensing and sites to access music and images for their etextbooks

  • experienced the process of creating and publishing an ebook

  • evaluated various publishing formats including pdfs, ibooks, and epub

  • collected a library of websites, tools, and resources for creating their ebooks

  • engaged in discussions about the best way to design an ebook and what to include

  • participated in various archived webinars with authors and teachers who have experienced publishing digital textbooks

 

Syllabus: 

 

Week 1: Introductions & Digital Literacy 

During the first week, participants will:

 

  • become familiar with the group tools and forums

  • introduce themselves and begin to establish connections with mentors and peers

  • learn to create and define a copyright for their creative works

  • describe their teaching situation and students

  • meet participants and determine if they would like to work in small groups of similar settings and subject sessions in creating one collaborative digital textbook

  • evaluate the legal use of materials in ebooks and options

  • learn from experienced and distinguished authors, teachers, and trainers at a live/recorded session 

 

Week 2: Visual Design, Layout & Logistics

During this week, participants will:

 

  • evaluate the current content in textbooks aimed at their learners
  • create a multimedia presentation in which they evaluate various ebook designs they like

  • outline what they envision for their digital textbooks 

  • evaluate their peers' outlines and provide feedback

  • learn from experienced and distinguished authors, teachers, and trainers at a live/recorded session 

 

Week 3: Mapping it Out

During this week, participants will:

 

  • map out their chapters for peer feedback

  • evaluate their peers' chapter outlines and provide feedback

  • evaluate publishing options 
  • learn from experienced and distinguished authors, teachers, and trainers at a live/recorded session 

 


 

Week 4: Design That Supports Students

During this week, participants will:

 

  • complete part of their chapters and post for peer feedback

  • evaluate their peers' chapters and provide feedback

  • integrate one activity to engage their learners

  • learn from experienced and distinguished authors, teachers, and trainers at a live/recorded session 

 

Week 5: Publishing Our Chapters

During this week, participants will:

 

  • publish the beginnings of their digital textbook (1 or more chapters) and post for peer feedback 
  • reflect on their learning during this EVO session by completing the online evaluation form
  • list their ideas about marketing their ebooks 
  • learn from experienced and distinguished authors, teachers, and trainers at a live/recorded session
