About EVO

For five weeks in January and February, TESOL experts and participants from around the world engage in collaborative online discussions or hands-on virtual workshops of professional and scholarly benefit. These sessions bring together participants for a longer period of time than is permitted by land-based professional development conventions and allow a fuller development of ideas than is otherwise possible.

Sessions are free and open to anyone around the globe. It is not necessary to be a TESOL or IATEFL member nor to attend the TESOL

Convention in order to participate. All you need is access to the Internet.

We invite you to choose a session from this year's offerings listed below. Please inform your colleagues about this unparalleled professional development opportunity!

Click on the link for the session you want to attend, scroll down to the bottom of the page and find the joining instructions for each session there.

CEFR VS Assessment: How can new revisions help?

CEFR has settled rules for determining students' language levels. Yet what is the relation between it and assessment? What are the new clarifications/descriptors added through the recently published CEFR revisions? Can these really promote teachers' assessment of their students' classwork and their lesson plans as well? Is there a place for technology also? Let's look it up!!

Flipped_Learning_in_language_teaching

This five-week online workshop is designed for both those new to flipped learning and those who are already flipping their classes. The goal of flipped learning is to reach every student every day in a meaningful way. In flipped learning, the group learning space is revitalized and turned into a fertile environment for students to engage actively and creatively with learning. Thus, participants in the session will gain further insight into the concepts and processes of flipped learning in order to transform their pedagogical practice and will also learn about tools to enhance direct instruction and individual learning. Of course, whenever possible, the workshop employs a flipped approach!

Immersive Storytelling in Virtual Worlds

Storytelling is a wonderful means of getting our students excited. Recreating such a story in a virtual world would provide a great setting for roleplay and fanfiction.

Yet, how difficult is it to recreate scenes of Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter or King Arthur and his Round Table in OpenSim? What about character creation? Changing avatar outfit, clothes and accessories? When creating the scene, what building skills are required and when it comes to storytelling, what skills are required to come up with a captivating story? These main three challenges will be addressed in this EVO session and we hope to recreate a story in OpenSim.

 Scientific Literacy and CLIL

Scientific literacy and CLIL session aims to provide novice CLIL practitioners a focus on implementing CLIL principles in bilingual science classes. As many countries throughout the world have been implementing CLIL to promote competitiveness of the citizens, bilingual science may be one of the most challenging subject to be taught in English to EFL learners as science terminology and concepts may be more difficult to process in second or foreign language. This session aims to provide primary school teachers a platform to discuss how to promote scientific literacy with emphasis on how to provide support for English language learners. The sessions will be practice oriented as opposed to a focus on theories of CLIL. Videos of CLIL Science lessons will be analyzed in terms of language support and content learning.

Self-Care for Educators with Mindfulness

The human touch is critical to our wellbeing. In times of social distancing, online virtual meetings may seem to provide an alternative to face-to-face communication, but there are many challenges that can be facilitated by self-care. Participants of self-care for educators with mindfulness awareness practice will develop and strengthen a growth mindset to help face life and work related challenges with a caring attitude to the people they love and care for and their students. Participants will learn about the brain, self-care, and how to develop a mindfulness awareness practice.

TECHNO CLIL 2021

CLIL – Content and Language Integrated Learning - is a "dual focus" methodology, fostering the development of language competences and the delivery of subject content at the same time. It refers to the learning of a curricular subject in a foreign language, with great advantages in terms of students' learning outcomes and cognitive processes. CLIL is spreading more and more, as an integrated part of school curricula in many countries. In order to implement this innovative approach, the role of teacher training is essential. This EVO session is aimed at spreading CLIL methodology, combining teaching strategies and technical tools and eliciting reflections and discussions among teachers from all over the world. It is important to share good practices from the different countries and learn from other colleagues through synchronous and asynchronous web meetings.
